Supported Athletes in Gloucestershire

I'm really excited to be able to support some great Gloucestershire athletes through the winter and throughout 2022. I will be providing Sports Therapy (including sports massage, injury therapy and rehabilitation, and performance & injury prevention programs) to help them achieve their goals (and stay in one peice!) all through the year.

After finishing in the top 20 in 2021, we are pushing for a top 10 ranking in 2022. Laurie is one of the team responsible for the trails and jumps at the 417 Bike Park, and can usually be found 20ft in the air, or with his young family.

Trusted People

As well as working with great patients and some amazing athletes, I also get to work with some brilliant professionals in different fields, people that can offer something different but complimentary to my Sports Injury Therapy and Rehabilitation.

Kerry Newell  is a coach at Gloucester Athletics Club working with junior and senior athletes with outdoor rankings from County to previous European Gold Medalist for 5K, as well as Cotswold Pentathlon working with GB athletes. Kerry won the prestigious SW Run Leader of the Year for England Athletics in 2015.

Kerry is currently also working as a mentor for up and coming coaches in the South West, and has been working closely with the Women into Coaching group within England Athletics, to promote and support women into coaching. Kerry is now working on the British Athletics National Coach Development Programme to support her own coaching to the highest standard within the UK.

What I do

I specialise in helping people move better with no pain, play the sports they love, and enjoy a better quality of life.

I help people overcome injuries, pain, restrictions, aches, niggles, anything that prevents them from achieving their goals or taking part in the activities they love.

I combine the knowledge and skills of a Graduate Sports Therapist with an MSc in Sports Therapy, together with the expertise and experience gained from 15 years working with everyday people as a Personal Trainer and with professional sports teams as a Sports Massage Therapist.

I will identify where you are weak or tight, & what movements need improving. I will develop a personalised training and exercise program to improve your strength, stability, flexibility and mobility, resulting in less stress on the body, less pain, better movement and performance.

I can perform a full assessment of any sports injury or biomechanical or movement problem, provide a full diagnosis & appropriate treatment, and guide your long term rehabilitation to ensure the injury never returns. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a joint, muscle, tendon, ligament, bone, nerve or the spine, I can get to the cause of your problem and get you back stronger than ever before.

I specialise in Running Injuries and Golf Injuries, working closely with expert local coaches to help you not just recover from injury, but also prevent future injuries and improve your performance.

As a Golf Fitness Specialist, I can do much more than just help you recover from injuries and prevent injuries; I can help you improve your game by increasing your club head speed, carry distance and swing consistency, and reducing time away from the course because you will have fewer injuries! Beginning with the most in depth Golf specific movement assessment you will ever have, I will develop a custom made training program to develop your core stability, balance, strength and power.

Golf Injuries

Everyone has their own unique way of swinging a golf club, but every good swing should be based on a few fundamental principles, and these fundamentals are dependant on a body that is healthy, efficient, and fully functional. Restrictions and dysfunctions in the body can seriously affect your swing, and attempting to perform a swing that your body is not capable of can leave you vulnerable to injuries.

Everything begins with an assessment, because if we're not assesssing, we're guessing.

The initial assessment will allow us to diagnose your injury, identify keys restrictions & dysfunctions in the body, and any training errors which have contributed to the onset of your Golf injury.

The intial injury assessment consists of two main parts:

  • a discussion about your injury (when did it start? how does it feel?, what can/can't you do?, etc. This is the subjective assessment)
  • a physical (objective) assessment (mobility, flexibility, strength, etc)

We will then put an appropriate rehabilitation program in place, not only to resolve the actual injury, but also to correct those restrictions, dysfunctions and training errors.

This rehabilitation program may include:

  • exercises to be performed at home or at the gym (what you do everyday is important!)
  • treatments in clinic to help speed the healing and recovery process (every little helps)
  • advice on what activities you can continue and what to avoid (we want to keep you as active as possible)
  • customised foot orthotic insoles to encourage optimum foot function (more steps than swings in 18 holes!)
  • simple information about what your injury is, how it heals, why it happened, and how to avoid it in the future (knowledge is power!)
  • sometimes it's useful to get some images of your injury area (MRI, CT, X-ray, etc, in case it's a tricky one)

Rehabilitation is an active process, requires at least some time and effort on your part, and will require a variable number of follow up visits.

Once the injury itself is on the road to recovery, we can then carry out the most detailed & in-depth Golf specific assessment you will ever have, which will identify any further restrictions and dysfunctions which could leave you vulnerable to Golf injuries in the future. This will allow us to develop a custom, bespoke, training program to rehabilitate your entire body to prevent future injuries, by improving your mobility, core stability, balance, strength and power. We can also liaise wth your Golf coach to optimise your golf swing, making the most of your abilities while reducing the risk of further injury. Don't have a Golf Coach? We can put you in touch with the best golf coach (with the best facilities) in Gloucester!

A structured, bespoke Golf injury rehabilitation program will identify your current injury, and can correct these restrictions and dysfunctions, improving your swing and reducing the chance of injury.

Some clients have added 30-40 yards to their drive and irons after recovering from serious injuries!

If you are lucky enough to not have any Golf related pain or injuries at the moment, then now is the perfect time to increase your physical abilities, develop your core stability, mobility, balance, strength, and power, so you can safely perform the best possible Golf swing, and get the most out of the sport you love, without worrying about Golf related injuries or pain.

Research has shown that a structured training program can increase club head speed & driving distance in a matter of weeks!

Have a look at the Golf Fitness page to see whats involved and how it can help you.
